Usually most cigar aficionados prefer the cabinet or desktop builds. Both are made by top manufacturers in the industry, and come with more than enough space to hold all of your stock. In this article, we will be covering the 3 most commonly bought top humidors on the market. This includes the travel humidor, cabinet humidor and the desktop humidor.

Cigars are an investment. Unlike cigarettes, which are chain-smoked at rapid speeds and are, more often than not, left in the pack they came in, cigars meant to be savored; they are often compared to fine wine in that they are meant to be both collected and enjoyed. Another thing that makes them similar to fine wine is the fact that they have to be stored properly to maintain their unique characteristics as well as general quality. In fact, some might say that cigars are far more temperamental to store than wine—and they wouldn’t be wrong. This is why every cigar enthusiast eventually buys their own humidor.

What is a cigar humidor?

The humidor is more than a mere cigar box: It’s a humidity and temperature-controlled case that keeps your cigars in an environment similar to the tropical environments in which they were rolled and shipped from. Dryer climates, such as the mainland United States, dry out cigars. The result is a bad smoking experience at best—at worst, the cigars actually become ruined.

Most humidors out there is typically and traditionally made of untreated Spanish cedar that has been “seasoned” in order to achieve the prime level of moisture. Spanish cedar is a soft wood that is able to absorb water without buckling or molding. Furthermore, it retains the right level of moisture by being able to breathe—but not too much. Because of this, Spanish cedar is the goldilocks of woods when it comes to humidors.

Humidity Control

Humidity is achieved in a variety of ways. The simplest of which is to place a cup of distilled water in a seasoned Spanish cedar humidor. There are more complicated ways that involve sponges or even electrical humidification with sensors to let you know when it’s time to maintain the humidifier. Distilled water is the most common humidification substance, though sometimes high-grade propylene glycol or silica beads will be used. When it comes to water, it must always be distilled water as tap water invites minerals, bacteria and mold into the sensitive microclimate of your humidor.

The tobacco leaves inside cigars need to be at a humidity level between 68-72% to prevent drying as well as to maintain their flavor. Each cigar brand and type has its own notes just as fine wine does. The right level of humidity allows the tobacco leaves to sort of steep in their own oils, producing their intended flavor notes. Drying takes away those notes and individuality and leads to a dull sameness that ruins your investment.

Temperature Control

Aside of maintaining the proper humidity, other part of the humidor’s ideal microclimate is maintaining a constant temperature at or below 70 degrees Fahrenheit. This is achieved mainly by the design of the humidor in itself; a closed box of seasoned Spanish cedar will generally maintain a constant temperature around the ideal as long as it is out of the sun or direct fire of an air conditioner.

Not only does maintaining the proper temperature keep your cigars fresh and aid in maintaining proper humidity, it also prevents tobacco beetle eggs from hatching. Tobacco beetles are a pest that plagues the tobacco plant, hence they’re name. They’re extremely tiny and their eggs are obviously even smaller, so it’s very easy for those eggs to be rolled up even into the highest quality cigars.

Maintaining a temperature at or less than 70 degrees Fahrenheit will prevent the tobacco beetle’s eggs from hatching. The wisdom is that the eggs hatch at around 77 degrees Fahrenheit (they are a tropical bug after all), but it’s smart to never let the humidor even approach that temperature.

Simply put, a humidor is a must-have for any cigar owner—especially collectors—because it protects your investment’s quality, allowing you to enjoy a cigar years after purchase.

The different types of cigar humidors for sale

The most common and coveted type of humidor is the traditional untreated Spanish cedar humidor. Spanish cedar humidors are quite simple the best cigar humidors for sale online  out there. They come in a variety of sizes from cabinet size down to a size small enough to fit on your desk top. The best humidors for sale larger or smaller than this range tend to be made out of different materials. (More on that later.) But the Spanish cedar humidor is the most common humidor for home or office use; moreover, it’s the most coveted because of its capability to keep the temperature and humidity of your cigars at an ideal level when properly maintained.

There is a variant on the traditional Spanish cedar humidor where it might be Spanish cedar on the inside where you store your cigars and a different material on the outside. The reason for this design choice can be aesthetic or functional. However, unless the outer material is optimized for humidor usage, it will be inferior to a pure Spanish cedar humidor, so that’s something to keep in mind, when checking out Spanish cedar humidors with a different exterior. We truly believe that Spanish cedar is the best wood for a humidor, bar none.

Top humidors aren’t always made of Spanish cedar at all. Some are made of other woods, but these are best to avoid, because other types of cedar, for instance, smell a lot stronger than Spanish cedar. You taste what you smell so that smell will seep into your cigars, which is why if you’re going for a wooden humidor, it’s crucial to at least have the inside that your cigars touch be made of Spanish cedar. As said earlier, we believe that Spanish cedar is the best wood for cigar humidor in the entire world.

Synthetic Materials

The humidors out there on the market is made of synthetic materials like plastics; others are even made of metals. Again, it’s important that when buying a non-Spanish cedar humidor that these materials be designed in such a way that they’re optimized for humidor usage. After all, cigars need to breath; a poorly-designed aluminum humidor would not only make your cigars smell of metal, they would dampen and possibly get rust on them.

A good rule of thumb is this: If you’re going to buy a non-Spanish cedar humidor, do your research and buy from a reputable humidor maker who cares about product quality.

Not only do humidors come in a variety of materials, they also come in a variety of sizes. Commercial venues like cigar shops will often have a room-sized, walk-in humidor. This is to keep the cigars fresh before purchase. Also, some such commercial venues will rent space in these gigantic, top humidors so you can store the rest of your cigar collection that doesn’t fit in your personal at-home humidor.

There are also travel sized humidors. Some are cases, like a cigarette case, only that they’re humidors, and can hold up to ten cigars. There are even more ultra-portable humidors that are like your cigar’s own personal tube and just hold one at a time. This kind is considered the ultimate in portable humidors, however it is generally only used when space-saving is of prime concern. (For instance, you could use it instead of a larger case if you’re wearing a tighter fitting suit that a case would be too bulky to conceal in.)

What to consider when buying?

Often people who are looking for a humidor will buy something that is way too large for their collection. It ends up being a waste of space and money. With most of us not living in mansions, space is sometimes tight. And if we aren’t living in mansions, we could make do with saving some money. Especially when it comes to saving on necessary things.

So, something you can do to make sure you are not buying a humidor that is to large or to small, is by reading the reviews.

When buying a humidor, there are a few other things to keep in mind:

  • Humidors must be able to breathe. – If you’re buying a humidor that isn’t 100% Spanish cedar, research the specs and make sure it’s designed to be breathable. Otherwise, your cigars could mold.
  • Buy from reputable brands. – They care about the quality of their humidors and what they’re made out of; they’re less likely to sell you an inferior product.
  • Remember that a humidor is a commitment. – Even the most low-maintenance humidors will still require maintenance. You must keep them at the right temperature and moisture level, as well as check to make sure your cigars are neither dry nor moldy, as you can’t rely on moisture gauges alone.
  • Consider your cigar collection. – Cigars can’t be packed too tightly in a humidor or they might mold. So buy a humidor that is meant to hold a slightly larger amount than your current collection size. Or the collection size you intend to have.
  • Make sure travel humidors are of a quality to keep your cigar(s) fresh for the time period you need them to.

Things to avoid when buying?

  • Avoid buying a poorly built humidor made of inferior parts. –  If you buy a bad humidor and it ruins hundreds or thousands of dollars’ worth of cigars, what’s the point?
  • Avoid buying a humidor that is too small for your needs. – This will cause your cigars to suffer, potentially molding and thus ruining your collection.
  • Avoid overly complicated humidification systems. – Opt for a straightforward, proven humidification system that you will be likely to use and not neglect; after all, it’s crucial to maintaining your cigar humidor.
  • If you’re just beginning, don’t go to big. – Look through the best small humidors and find one that will fit your newly created collection.

Cigar humidor accessories

Some humidors come with a compartment or a magnet inside the lid. This gets the best humidor to keep a cigar cutter in. This can be useful, so that you always have a cigar cutter around, however, some cigar enthusiasts are unsure about whether or not this is a good idea or not. It’s most likely a personal choice, unless you notice cigar quality taking a downturn if you store the cigar cutter inside.

Humidifiers are the most common accessory by far. They can be as simple as a sponge or a cup of distilled water. Or something fancy like an electronic device. Either way, humidifiers, whether simple or complex, are the most important humidor accessory there is and are always a must-have.
